An excellent deal. Two books that go together so well are in one light weight binding.
the pen-and-ink screen savers on Kindle are sharp and clear.Still waiting for a really good illustrated version of these two classics. There's no reason they should look like that. I wish I could recommend this Kindle edition more highly. However, after downloading the sample, I was very disappointed at the poor quality reproductions of the books' original pen-and-ink drawings. They're unbelievably blurry, looking more like they were sketched in pale, dull pencil than pen and ink.
I bought this for my 12-year old granddaughter as part of an effort to build a classics library for her -- the schools don't seem to require that they be read any more --she read it through, so I guess that the effort was worthwhile.
The book arrived in perfect condition. It goes to show how ignorant people can be. I home school and we have studied American history. I am pigmented and have been called "nigger".
Prejudice still exists today. I have taught my children that everyone is a human and we treat others the way we would want to be treated. These are old stories, written at a different time. My sixth grade son is learning about "voice" in writing. It's the way it was. While I've never read either story before, I know that my brother enjoyed these classics about 40 years ago.
Slavery is a chapter in our history that we should be ashamed of. I bought this so that we could enjoy a classic while learning about voice, that part in writing that makes a story come alive. I was sorry to read in some reviews how offended some people were by the terminology used in the book. The funny thing is that I am not of African-American heritage.
I am 50 years old and haven't read this since elementary school. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a long time. This was a trip back for me in two ways. Even though it is set back in time, I could relate to the feelings of these young boys and remember well that time of my life. It's a must read for your kids (particularly boys) and anyone who has or has not read it. For one, it takes place in a different time when life was a little simpler. Also it takes me back to the first time I read it.
